Schizophrenia

February 27, 2010 1 comment

My BnB2/HD2 PBL write-up is the one on Schizophrenia.  You may remember I wrote a few words a while ago saying how I found the condition quite disturbing.  Quite why I should be more afraid of schizophrenia than, say, heart disease I’m not too sure.

Anyway, in having to do the write-up I’ve been forced to look at it in more detail.  And I came across this passage from one of the course textbooks – it’s based on notes a schizophrenic patient made about the voices he heard.  Scares the crap out of me.  Thought I’d share it with you.

So much work, so little time

Today we got given our BnB2/HD2 PBL write-ups.  I think they’re meant to be about 2000 words and is essentially one particular scenario studied in greater depth – though anything over a page of A4 would count as greater depth as my average PBL notes are ‘minimal’, to say the least.

This adds to the already impressive pile of work I’ve accumulated recently.  I’ve got to:

  • Finish my SSC2a presentation
  • Do my SSC2a essay
  • Finish my Medsoc presentation
  • Do my Medsoc essay
  • Do my PBL write-up
  • Do the next PBL
  • Revise for the BnB2/HD2 exam in two weeks

And to think I had planned to enter an ophthalmology essay competition…

Teacher tension

A new module, a new PBL tutor.  Having missed the first PBL (I thought it was a p.m. switch-round jobby again) on Monday, I turned up today with an apology, an open mind and high hopes we’d get a good facilitator.  Again, I couldn’t understand a word the guy said, but he seemed nice enough.  Or so I thought.

Toward the end of the session, as our learning objectives were being written up, the facilitator asks me if I’ve followed the ‘seven steps’ of a PBL session.  I never do.  Nobody does.  I don’t even know what they all are.

“I won’t lie to you, no I haven’t actually.”, I answered.
The rest of the class burst into laughter.  Definitely not my intention.
“Well, why not?  Have you ever done a PBL before??”, he shot back, obviously feeling a bit annoyed now.
“Yeh I’ve done lots of PBLs before but no I’ve never done one “properly”.  In my opinion as long as we get the job done it doesn’t matter if we go through the 7 steps religiously or not.  It’s a waste of time – in my opinion – as I say.”
Again, my trusty classmates started laughing.  Thanks guys.
” Sorry but that isn’t good enough, I’m going to have to give you an unsatisfactory remark as chair for this session.”

This isn’t school.  I’m not going to get an end of year behaviour report.  There won’t be a parents evening.  What a dick.
